Yoriichi Tsugikuni: Demon Slayer Legend

Yoriichi Tsugikuni is considered the strongest Demon Slayer to have ever existed. In this article, I will cover every single detail about Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Yoriichi Tsugikuni and Michikatsu Tsugikuni are the twin brothers.

Yoriichi was the type of guy who seldom responded to anything. He used to remain calm and silent, often leading people to mistake him as deaf due to his less responsive behavior. Yoriichi was considered weaker than Michikatsu, and for that reason, Yoriichi’s father wanted to pass on his will to Michikatsu rather than Yoriichi.

As Yoriichi was born with a special mark on his forehead, his father viewed this as an ill omen and attempted to kill Yoriichi. However, Yoriichi’s mother saved him. After some time, Yoriichi’s mother died, and he ran away from his home, dwelling in the woods. He spent much time in the woods, running without stopping. This was the first indication of Yoriichi’s power. Yoriichi then met a young lady of the same age, and they married. Uta, Yoriichi’s wife, became pregnant. While Yoriichi was out on an errand, he returned to find his pregnant wife covered in blood—dead, a victim of demons.

Losing the lives of his unborn child and wife devastated Yoriichi. He was so hurt that he couldn’t bring himself to bury her for tens, but ultimately, he buried her. After the incident, Yoriichi joined the Demon Slayer Corps. Upon his entrance, it was revealed that the special mark on his forehead was a Demon Slayer mark, appearing only for those who are strong and possess immense ability.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni wore Hanafuda earrings and a unique kimono, wielding a sword on his hip. During his first day in the Demon Slayer Corps, he demonstrated more accurate sword skills than the other swordsmen. Yoriichi then received further training and intelligence about killing demons. As he trained hard and keenly, he mastered the Sun Breathing technique and 13 other forms derived from it. Soon, Yoriichi encountered Muzan, the demon who killed his family. In their fight, Yoriichi had the upper hand, seeing through Muzan’s Five Brains and Seven Hearts, and acting independently. Yoriichi almost killed 80% of Muzan’s disintegrated body and beheaded him. However, Muzan, with his demonic powers, survived and fled.

Yoriichi learned that his twin brother, Michikatsu, was now an Upper Moon Demon, referred to as Kokushibo. Yoriichi decided to meet his brother to ask him why he joined the demons. In their encounter, Yoriichi, despite being in his 80s, defeated his brother. Kokushibo, with demonic powers, maintained his younger state, and Yoriichi, sustaining injuries, ultimately died due to excessive exertion on his aged body.

Yoriichi was the only person Muzan feared. Yoriichi gifted his Hanafuda earrings to Sumiyoshi, Tanjiro’s ancestor, passing on the legacy. Those Hanafuda earrings ultimately reached Tanjiro Kamado, the reason why Muzan feared Tanjiro. The fear of Yoriichi still runs through the veins of Muzan Kibutsuji.
